Tottenham defender Djed Spence signs new contract after impressing Thomas Frank

Tottenham have confirmed that defender Djed Spence has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

Spence, 24, joined Spurs from Middlesbrough in 2022 but endured a difficult start to life in North London, making just six appearances in his first season under Antonio Conte and spending time out on loan with Rennes, Leeds United and Genoa.

He did not make his full Premier League debut for the club until December 2024 – more than two years after signing.

However, the right-back enjoyed a breakthrough in the second half of last season under Ange Postecoglou, becoming a regular starter and playing a pivotal role in Spurs’ European campaign.

His progress has now been rewarded with fresh terms that underline his status as part of the club’s long-term plans.

Spence has made 42 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham, scoring twice, and started both the UEFA Super Cup defeat to PSG and Spurs’ opening-day Premier League win over Burnley.

The England Under-21 international will next be in action when Postecoglou’s side travel to champions Manchester City on August 23.

With the fitness of Destiny Udogie a constant question mark at Spurs, Spence has taken his chance to step up and fill the void left by the Italian.

Some Spurs fans even question whether Spence should keep his starting spot when Udogie does eventually return.
