Liverpool step up Marc Guehi pursuit

Liverpool are increasing their efforts to secure the signing of Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi before the transfer deadline.

The Palace skipper, who has just 12 months left on his contract, could be sold in the current window to prevent him leaving for free next year.

Earlier this week, chairman Steve Parish admitted this was a possibility, saying he could be sold this summer “to avoid him moving on a free transfer in 12 months’ time.”

According to reports, Liverpool have already held preliminary discussions over a deal for the 25-year-old.

However, even if an agreement is reached between the clubs, Guehi may still need convincing that Anfield is the right destination for his career.

Beyond the financial side of his personal terms, playing time is expected to be a decisive factor.

Guehi is a mainstay in Palace’s defence, and with a World Cup on the horizon, regular first-team football will be vital to his ambitions.

Alongside the Guehi pursuit, Liverpool are also working on a move for Parma’s 18-year-old centre-back Giovanni Leoni. The Italy Under-19 international is viewed as a long-term prospect rather than a direct alternative to Guehi.
