Glasner ‘positive’ Palace will win legal battle for Europa League place

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner says he is “positive” the club will win its legal battle to overturn a drop from the Europa League into the Europa Conference League.

UEFA imposed the sanction after ruling Palace had breached its multi-club ownership regulations.

The governing body pointed to American investor John Textor, who holds shares in the South London outfit while also serving as majority owner of French club Lyon – another side set to feature in the Europa League this season.

Palace lodged their appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in July, naming UEFA, Lyon, and Nottingham Forest in their challenge.

Forest, who ended last season seventh in the Premier League, would take Palace’s Europa League spot if the decision is upheld.

The CAS hearing began on Friday, with a ruling anticipated by Monday.

Speaking to reporters before Sunday’s Community Shield clash with Liverpool, Glasner said: “I’m always positive.

“I can’t see anything why we would should be demoted and why we should stay in the Conference League.

“I know how the club works and it is just the chairman and the people who work here daily that take the decisions.”

Why were Palace demoted?

UEFA rules prohibit clubs under the significant control of the same individual or entity from appearing in the same competition.

Palace failed to meet a 1 March 2025 deadline to provide evidence of a restructuring that would address those concerns.

The club maintains that Textor does not exert decisive influence, but UEFA rejected that defence.

Last week, chairman Steve Parish told The Rest is Football podcast he was “very hopeful” of a successful appeal.

In their submission, Palace have asked for UEFA’s financial control body ruling to be annulled and for their reinstatement in the Europa League at the expense of either Forest or Lyon.

For now, Palace are preparing for a Europa Conference League play-off tie later this month against either Fredrikstad of Norway or Danish side Midtjylland.

The Europa League group stage gets underway on 24 September.
