Jamie Carragher has questioned the wisdom of Liverpool signing both Hugo Ekitike and, potentially, Alexander Isak this summer.
The Premier League champions spent £69million on bringing Ekitike to Anfield from Eintracht Frankfurt but remain interested in Newcastle striker Isak.
Both men play predominantly through the middle, although Ekitike can also play off the left.
Ekitike could be an expensive back-up at Liverpool
And Carragher believes it is surprising that Ekitike was signed for such a large amount given he would be a back up if Liverpool do manage to prise Isak out of St James’ Park.
The former Liverpool centre-half outlined his thoughts alongside Paul Scholes on The Overlap and then took to X to explain it further.
Having outlined his initial uneasiness at Liverpool possibly spending £150m on Isak, Carragher then said it was “un-Liverpool-like” to spend £69m on a squad player.
The Reds saw an initial approach for Isak rejected by Newcastle and outlined the fact they would not be rushing in with an improved offer.
Isak set for crunch talks at Newcastle
Isak is set to meet with Magpies boss Eddie Howe today for the first time since skipping the club’s pre-season tour of the Far East. He subsequently trained on his own at former club Real Sociedad in another indication of his dissatisfaction with life on Tyneside.
In addition to Ekitike, Liverpool have also signed Florian Wirtz this summer.
Darwin Nunez is set to leave Anfield, however, with Al-Hilal closing on a deal for the Uruguay international. Al-Hilal and Newcastle are both owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund so it may be by boosting Liverpool’s transfer pot they are increasing the chances of Isak moving to Merseyside.
