Bayer Leverkusen win first game of Hjulmand era after Ten Hag exit

Bayer Leverkusen claimed their first win of the new Bundesliga season as they prevented Eintracht Frankfurt from taking top spot with a 3-1 win on Friday.

Leverkusen dispensed with the services of former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag on September 1 after claiming one point from their first two games.

He was replaced by Kasper Hjulmand, and the former Denmark boss tasted victory in his opening game despite Leverkusen finishing the game with nine men.

Alejandro Grimaldo dipped a 10th-minute free-kick into the right-hand corner to open the scoring, and Leverkusen’s lead was doubled in first-half stoppage time when Patrik Schick converted from the penalty spot.

Can Yilmaz Uzun pulled one back for Frankfurt, and the visitors were given further hope when Robert Andrich was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Ezequiel Fernandez followed Andrich down the tunnel in the 92nd minute when he received a second caution, but Leverkusen hung on and Grimaldo sent the BayArena into raptures six minutes later as he curled a second free-kick into the top-right corner to seal victory.

Marseille 4-0 Lorient

Marseille prepared for a clash with Real Madrid in the Champions League in style as they put 10-man Lorient to the sword.

Darlin Yongwa was sent off in the 10th minute for pulling down Timothy Weah inside the box, with Mason Greenwood converting the subsequent penalty. Benjamin Pavard made it 2-0 in the 20th minute, marking his Marseille debut with a header from Greenwood’s corner.

Angel Gomes made it 3-0 as he bounced on a rebound in the 33rd minute and, though Lorient did largely stem the tide thereafter, Nayef Aguerd rounded off an emphatic win in the 93rd minute.

Sevilla 2-2 Elche

Elche remain unbeaten in LaLiga despite letting a lead slip late against Sevilla.

Sevilla went ahead in the 28th minute through Isaac Romero, but Elche appeared on course for victory through Andre Silva and Rafa Mir.

But there was a twist in the tale as Peque lashed home an equaliser in the 85th minute. Newly promoted Elche have taken six points from four games with three draws and one win.
