Tyler Young joins Ipswich and could play alongside dad in Championship

Tyler Young has joined Ipswich Town’s under-21 side, creating the prospect of lining up alongside his father Ashley Young for the Championship club.

Ashley, now 40, arrived at Portman Road on a free transfer this summer after leaving Everton, where he spent last season.

His career has spanned two decades and includes 39 England caps, beginnings at Watford, two separate stints with Aston Villa, nine years at Manchester United, a spell at Inter Milan, and time at Goodison Park.

Now at Ipswich, he could be reunited on the pitch with his son. Tyler had been on trial with the Tractor Boys during pre-season before agreeing a deal in August to join the club’s development squad.

The younger Young has previously been part of the academies at Arsenal, MK Dons, and QPR, and most recently played for Peterborough last season.

The pair almost faced each other competitively in the FA Cup last term when Everton were drawn against Peterborough in the third round.

Ashley came off the bench for Everton, but Tyler stayed among the substitutes – a decision that drew criticism for Posh boss Darren Ferguson.

“If the game had been 2-0 at that point I would have put him on, but it’s 1-0, I’ve got to get a forward on,” Ferguson explained after the match. “We’re not a charity case, as much as I wanted Tyler to get on with his dad.

“One of their [Everton’s] players had a bit of a pop at me, which is bang out of order. I’ve got to do what is best for our team and at that point, 1-0, I’m trying to get a result.”

Since joining Ipswich, Ashley has featured in all four Championship fixtures so far this season. Tyler, meanwhile, was named on the bench for Ipswich’s Premier League 2 clash with Derby in August and has also appeared in friendlies.
