Alexander Isak has issued a statement in which he says he is “forever grateful” to Newcastle after his controversial exit to Liverpool.
Isak’s uneasy stand-off with the Tyneside club ended yesterday with Premier League champions Liverpool paying a British record fee of £125 to sign the Sweden international.
He has left a bitter fanbase behind but Isak went on Instagram this afternoon to offer his thanks after three years at St James’ Park.
He wrote: “I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, the staff, and above all, the city of Newcastle and all the amazing supporters for the three unforgettable years we shared together.
“Together, we have written history and brought the club to the place where it truly belongs. It has been an honour to be part of the journey from reaching the Champions League to winning the first trophy in over 70 years.
“Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle.”
The post is accompanied by a video that shows a compilation of Isak’s goals as well as footage of the celebrations that followed their EFL Cup win over Liverpool earlier this year.
Isak unlikely to win over furious Newcastle fanbase
Isak is currently on international duty but it is highly unlikely his message will win over supporters still furious at the way he handled himself during the latter stages of his Newcastle career.
The 25-year-old made public his desire to leave, with boss Eddie Howe ordering him to train alone and he was not considered for the first three Premier League games of the season, none of which Newcastle have won.
He has been labelled a ‘rat’ by supporters on social media with the term also being used on banners that have appeared around St James’ Park.
Gordon and Botman stick up for Isak
He has received messages of support from two former Newcastle team-mates today, though, with both Sven Botman and Anthony Gordon sending their best wishes.
Netherlands international Botman wrote on Instagram: “What started off as team-mates growed in one of my rare best friendships. No more words needed brother, all the best in your next chapter @alex_isak [sic].”
That sentiment was backed up by England winger Gordon, who posted: “Regardless of the situation and what’s gone on. It’s been a pleasure to play with you.
“One of the best chemistries I’ve had on the pitch, and more importantly, a great person and teammate.
“I wish you nothing but the best brother.”
Isak’s agent Vlado Lemic struck a different tone, though, aiming what appeared to be a parting shot at Newcastle.
In a message sent to talkSPORT, Lemic said: “It’s nice when you have someone to be with, but it is even nicer when you know who you will never be with again.”
