Liverpool sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle for British record fee

Liverpool have completed the signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle, ending a saga that has dominated this transfer window.

The 25-year-old has signed a long-term contract at Anfield after Liverpool agreed to pay a British record transfer fee of £125million.

Speaking for the first time as a Red, he said: “It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it.

“I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans, and getting back out there.

“I think I have a lot to give, I think I have a lot to improve. I’m a striker but I always want to give as much as possible to the team, mainly goals but much more than that as well.

“I want to win everything. Yeah, [as simple as that].”

Newcastle posted their own statement after the deal was announced, and they reserved just 37 words for the man who led them to Carabao Cup glory last season.

It read: “Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee.

“The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions.”

Isak finally gets his wish and joins Liverpool

It means Isak gets the move he has hankered for all summer having made public his desire to leave Newcastle two weeks ago. Liverpool saw a £110m bid rejected at the start of August, after the player missed the club’s pre-season tour of Asia with an apparent minor injury.

The Sweden international scored 23 goals in 34 Premier League appearances last term as Eddie Howe’s men finished fifth to qualify for the Champions League.

Last term also saw the club end a 70-year wait for a major trophy when they lifted the EFL Cup, with Isak scoring in a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the final at Wembley.

Isak deal another act in brilliant window for Liverpool

His capture completes a remarkable window for Liverpool, who have strengthened significantly after cruising to the Premier League title last season.

Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong have all moved to Merseyside this summer and, although performances have not been overly convincing in the early weeks of the season, Liverpool still top the table with a 100 per cent record.

Newcastle have started in contrasting fashion. They have scored twice in three games and are yet to win.

They have finally made moves to replace Isak over recent days, however, signing Germany international Nick Woltemade for £69m while a £55m move for Yoane Wissa is also expected to be done prior to the deadline.

Prior to that they were rejected by a host of players, including Liam Delap, Benjamin Sesko, Ekitike and Brian Mbeumo.
