Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The Italy international is set for a medical in Italy this afternoon with the framework of an agreement between the clubs agreed last month.
Donnarumma will replace Ederson as the club’s number one with the Brazil international expected to join Fenerbahce before the window closes later today.
Donnarumma was a key member of the PSG squad that claimed the club’s first Champions League trophy last season with a series of impressive displays – most notably against Liverpool in the round of 16.
He played in the Club World Cup but was then surprisingly omitted from Luis Enrique’s squad for the Super Cup win over Tottenham.
And when PSG signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille, the writing was on the wall for the 26-year-old.
Donnarumma is an excellent shot-stopper but not regarded as one of the better goalkeepers in Europe with his feet.
And Luis Enrique admitted: “He’s one of the best players in his position, without a doubt. He’s even better as a person. We’re looking for a goalkeeping profile different from Donnarumma. It’s always difficult to make the decision in these kinds of situations.”
He therefore seems a surprising choice for a team coached by Pep Guardiola, and the polar opposite of Ederson, who is excellent at building moves from the back.
Donnarumma joined PSG from AC Milan in 2021 and made 161 appearances for the club in all competitions, keeping 56 clean sheets.
He has made 74 appearances for Italy and won the player of the tournament trophy after captaining the Azzurri to the Euro 2020 title four years ago.
