Gunners agree loan deal with £45m obligation for Leverkusen defender

Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie on loan with an obligation to make the move permanent, according to multiple reports.

The Gunners have come to terms on an arrangement that features a £45m obligation to sign the Ecuador defender on a five-year contract at the end of this season.

Hincapie, who can play centre-back and left-back, has made 166 appearances for Leverkusen since joining the Bundesliga club from Argentinian side Talleres in 2021.

He was part of the Leverkusen side that won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in the 2023-24 season, going the entire domestic season unbeaten while also reaching the final of the Europa League, which they lost 3-0 to Atalanta.

The deal features a 10 per cent sell-on clause, with Hincapie’s arrival set to enable Jakub Kiwior to complete his move to Porto.

Hincapie will become Arsenal’s eighth signing of the transfer window, with his first chance for a debut for the Gunners set to come after the international break when they host Nottingham Forest on September 13. Mikel Arteta’s men face Liverpool in a blockbuster clash this Sunday.
