West Ham agree £40m deal to sign Fernandes from Southampton

West Ham have reached an agreement worth more than £40 million to sign Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

The 21-year-old Portuguese talent has been given the green light to travel to London and undergo his medical ahead of the move.

If completed, Fernandes would become the Hammers’ third most expensive signing in history, behind Sebastien Haller (£45m) and Lucas Paqueta (£51m).

The signing comes at a crucial time for manager Graham Potter, who is already under pressure after his side opened the campaign with three straight defeats across all competitions.

Southampton, meanwhile, stand to earn a significant return on the £15m they invested to bring Fernandes from Sporting just last year.

Since his arrival at St Mary’s, the Portugal Under-21 international has made 46 appearances, contributing four goals and seven assists.

West Ham are also on the verge of strengthening further, with Monaco’s Soungoutou Magassa expected to join in a deal valued at around £17.3m.

The 21-year-old France Under-21 midfielder is due to undergo a medical on Thursday.
