Van de Ven gives Tottenham surprise lead against PSG in Super Cup

Micky van de Ven slotted home a 39th minute goal to give Tottenham Hotspur a surprise lead going into the break against Paris Saint-Germain the Uefa Super Cup final.

The Champions League winners had the first real chance of the game when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia turned neatly in the box but the Georgian could only lash his effort wide of the mark.

Spurs, meanwhile, looked threatening on the counter, and utilising a more direct, risk-averse style of play than they did last season, appeared to already be showcasing a different blueprint under new boss Thomas Frank.

Both sides had several half-chances before Richarlison drew a smart save from Lucas Chevalier, who is in the side amid growing uncertainty over Gianluigi Donnarumma’s future at the Parisian club.

But Spurs’ promising display was eventually rewarded when a free-kick into the PSG box was not dealt with, allowing Rodrigo Bentancur to head back across goal.

The ball found its way to Palhinha whose effort was saved wonderfully by Chevalier onto the bar. Van de Ven reacted quickest to send the rebound into the back of the net to give Frank’s side a deserved lead going into the break.

Mohammed Kudus then helped on an effort that crashed against right-hand upright as Spurs went close to doubling their lead late in the half.
